byzantine_art_project_pic.jpgI chose to use this picture because I thought that it was really pretty. I liked the way it curved inward and all of the pretty colors. I liked the how the yellow cross is above Jesus. To me, this picture represents hope. There are a lot of animals around Jesus and they all seem so happy and peaceful.
This picture is representative of the Byzantine Empire because it was made in that era for many uses. Some of the uses include baptisms and meeting places for eucharistic services. It has an apse above the altar, like most basilicas built in the time of Byzantine rule.
This picture is from the basilica of Sant Apollinare in Ravena, Italy. It was built in commemeration of Ravena's first bishop, Saint Apollinaris, by the emperor Justinian. The basilica was built in the year 549 AD and it still stands today.
